and insignia. Gemstones used included Turquoise, Carnelian, Chalcedony,

From the first Sumerian
dynasty of Ur to the Assyrian period. Jewelry designs included leaves,
grapes, cones and spirals. Gemstones used included agate, lapis, jasper

2200-300 BC

Jade carving became a
sophisticated art during the Shang dynasty (1600–1050 B.C.).

500 BC to 400 AD |

included seal rings, amulets and talismans. Designs favored included
coiling snakes and animal heads. Jewelry types included brooches, rings,
necklaces, bracelets and earrings. The fibula, a clothes fastener, the
cameo and hoop earrings were introduced. Gemstones used included
sapphires, emeralds, garnets, jet, topaz, pearls, amber and diamonds. |

Medieval Jewelry of the Middle Ages Timeline |
1066 - 1485 |
Sumptuary laws fiercely
regulated who could wear jewelry to ensure that the upper class
structure was maintained. Trade with East following the Crusades opened
via Italy. Jewelry designs and fashion included religious jewelry and
jewelry was used to decorate both hair and clothing. Jewelry types
included, necklaces, pendants, clasps, bracelets, rings and head
jewelry. Gemstones used included precious stones diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires

designs and fashion included hearts, stars, crescents, birds and

diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires and pearls and semi-precious
stones including turquoise, coral, garnets, amethysts onyx, amber,
coral, opals, peridots, and jet. |

1890-1910 |
Jewelry designs and fashion
encompassed romantic and imaginary curving, slender long limbed lines of
the era in winged bird and flower forms. Styles were believed to have
been intended to evoke mystical symbols and magical powers including
dragons and fairies. Gemstones used included all of the semi precious
stones. |

1895-1915 |
Jewelry designs and fashion
were frivolous and fun and continued to be influenced by Art Nouveau
designs also including serpents and stars. Jewelry types included dog
collar necklaces, bar brooches, pearl sautoirs and bangle or chain
bracelets. Gemstones used included amethysts, emeralds, opals, pearls,
peridots, rubies, and sapphires. |

1920-1935 |
The bold and daring Jazz age! The Roaring
Twenties!Jewelry designs and fashion included vibrant colors and
geometrical shapes influenced by Cubism, Modernism, abstract designs and
oriental art. Jewelry types included the popularisation of the the
wristwatch. Gemstones used included diamonds, rubies, emeralds,
sapphires and pearls and semi-precious stones including turquoise,
jade, coral, garnets, amethysts onyx, amber, coral, opals and peridots |
